Opinion: nepotism is back in Brazil – Justice Minister Flavio Dino’s brother should be Lula’s new prosecutor general

(Opinion) Deputy prosecutor Nicolao Dino, brother of the Minister of Justice and Public Safety, Flavio Dino, is expected to be the new prosecutor general in President Lula’s government.

The information is from Senator Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES). Since 2022, according to CNN Brazil, Nicolao’s name has been considered by PT leaders to succeed the current Prosecutor General, Augusto Aras.

“After the accusations I have been making about President Lula and Justice Minister Flavio Dino committing a crime of prevarication (they knew a day before about what will happen in Brasilia), Lula wants to simply put Justice Minister Flavio Dino’s brother to replace Augusto Aras aa s prosecutor. So nothing can touch them!

Nicolao appeared on two triple lists prepared by the National Association of Prosecutors of the Republic in 2017 and 2021.

However, his name was not chosen by former presidents Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro.

In 2020, Dino’s brother argued with Aras during a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, which ended abruptly after a heated exchange.

At the time, on behalf of some colleagues, Nicolao criticized the positions that Aras took on the task forces of the Federal Public Ministry.

Should Nicolao Dino become the prosecutor, motions unfavorable to the government should have no chance of passing in the Judiciary.

The Supreme Court does more or less what it wants already today, leaving prosecutor Augusto Aras out when it suits them.

Tomorrow, the two Dino brothers can determine how the law is interpreted, who and what is prosecuted and what is not, and the Supreme Court gives the final blessing.

A watertight system that not only simplifies authoritarian government but invites it.
