(Opinion) China’s communist regime has gradually gained more influence at the World Economic Forum in recent years, completing its domination of Davos in 2023.
Chinese Communist Party propagandists this week were quick to make clear that the spirit of the World Economic Forum (WEF), held annually in Davos, Switzerland, is made in the image and likeness of the economic and political ideas applied in China.
Although China’s influence in Davos has grown inexorably in recent years, this is the first year when many agree that there is no question whatsoever about who dominates the exhibition themes.
It is also the first year to meet in person again, following the global coronavirus pandemic for which China is blamed by many.
In this year, 2023, it has become clear that the country that is believed to have unleashed the Wuhan virus on the rest of the world relentlessly lied about the disease and cracked down on anyone who questioned its narrative, dominating the world’s most important global cooperation forum.
On Monday, China’s state-run Global Times newspaper reported that the WEF showed that “the world economy and people’s social lives are gradually emerging from the shadow of the pandemic.
“As China’s image and voice always attract a lot of attention at the WEF, the world is looking forward to China’s constructive role at a time when global economic risks are increasing,” the article said.
The Global Times briefly mentioned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which China steadfastly refuses to denounce as a global risk factor.
“The real challenge of our age is that some countries have repeatedly adopted unilateral policies in an attempt to revitalize their own economies by discarding trade based on supporting friends,” said the regime’s propagandists.
In other words, the big problem is that too many countries don’t trust Chinese investments, which have proven time and time again to be the most predatory in the world.
Since 1979, China has never missed a Davos Economic Forum led by Klaus Schwab.
While this forum was once one of the world’s greatest advocates of free markets, it now advocates the establishment of regimes that have a democratic facade but are socialist and authoritarian at their core.
At this year’s World Economic Forum, however, China had to use its propaganda to the fullest, as for the first time in the last 50 years, it has experienced weak economic growth, and the “Chinese miracle” so often flaunted at Davos is currently not as miraculous as it has been.
In another Global Times article, the U.S. and Japan were accused of daring to cooperate on space exploration because the agreement was allegedly imbued with an “underlying anti-China tinge,” which came up in several WEF panels.
The Chinese newspaper briefly complained that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described China as the “greatest shared strategic challenge” between Washington and Tokyo”.
But what really angered the Global Times was the new policy of Japan’s defense under Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, including closer cooperation with the United States and the largest military escalation in the Pacific since World War II.
“Japan should avoid becoming America’s lackey in space and abandon the idea of playing the role of a ‘sharp spear’ in the Pacific, as this would violate its postwar promises and damage the fragile trust of its Asian neighbors.
This new role would lead to chaos and turmoil in the Asia-Pacific region,” the Global Times judged in an unequivocal speech that would not have occurred in Davos at another time.
