During Easter weekend, Celebrity Infinity docked in the port of Montevideo.
This marked the end of the cruise season for South America’s smallest Spanish-speaking country, which saw 150 cruise ships arrive in its capital.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Remo Monzeglio said, “This is very encouraging because cruise tourism was one of the most affected tourism activities, where growth was not foreseen.”
“However, people have chosen this type of tourism, and we are delighted because we are surpassing the years that were not bad.”
He said the 2022-2023 season was “the best cruise season in the last eight years.”
Monzeglio elaborated that the port of Punta del Este, the epicenter of summer social activities in the South American country, has received fifty of these ships.
The 2022-2023 cruise season opened last December 22, when four ships arrived at the port of Montevideo, one of them with more than 4,000 passengers on board.
Monzeglio proposed that the port of Colonia del Sacramento become another destination for cruise ships.
Located in the city of Colonia del Sacramento, this river port, which is only visited by ships from Argentina, is an important tourist destination in Uruguay.
