Argentina celebrates Uruguay’s independence – emblematic monuments to be illuminated in blue

RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL – Uruguayan Ambassador to Argentina Carlos Enciso announced a series of celebrations in the neighboring country for the 196th anniversary of Uruguay’s independence.

According to him, it will not be possible to hold the Independence Day reception due to the health emergency. For this reason, they have developed another option that has to do with different programs, from a conservatory with Enrique Iglesias to different personalities from the international arena or events at the monuments of General San Martin and Artigas.

Enciso explained that the idea of the different activities is to create a spirit of fraternity “with the independence of our country, our origin” in Argentina, which will be joined by all Uruguayans who want to participate through the different networks, said the Uruguayan ambassador.

Regarding the program, it was informed that on Tuesday, August 24, a virtual discussion entitled “Seeking consensus in the global scenario” will be held, jointly organized by the Uruguayan Embassy, the Argentine Council for International Relations (CARI), the Uruguayan Council for International Relations (CURI) and the Uruguayan National Business Academy (ACADECO). The event will be broadcast on YouTube.

Participants in the discussion will include Argentina’s ambassador to Uruguay, Alberto Iribarne; Ambassador José Octavio Bordón, president of CARI; Juan Pablo Corlazzoli, president of CURI; and Enrique Iglesias, the former foreign minister. The moderator will be Luis Mosca, former Minister of Economy and Finance of Uruguay.

On the other hand, on the same day, from 7 PM to midnight, emblematic monuments of the city of Buenos Aires (Floralis Genérica, Puente de la Mujer, Usina del Arte and Planetarium) will be illuminated, paying homage to Uruguay from the city of Buenos Aires. The action will be repeated on August 25, Uruguay’s Independence Day, when the Obelisk will also be illuminated.

The message will also illuminate the walls of the city of Buenos Aires and project images, phrases, and popular jokes of Uruguayan personalities who have marked the history of Argentina, both culturally and in sports, and are a symbol of brotherhood that unites both countries, such as China Zorrilla, Fernando Peña, writers Mario Benedetti and Juan Carlos Onetti, the creator of “La leyenda del Río de la Plata” Pedro Figari, athletes Irineo Leguisamo “El Pulpo” and Walter Gómez, Zitarrosa, Julio Sosa and many others.

The activities also include a quiz game with famous Uruguayan personalities who live or have lived in Argentina.

On Tuesday, August 24, at 8:00 p.m., there will be a Orquesta de los Barrios concert, conducted by renowned cellist Néstor Tedesco, to commemorate Uruguay’s independence.

On Wednesday, August 25, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to General José de San Martín in Plaza San Martín and later another wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to General José Gervasio Artigas in Plaza República Oriental del Uruguay.
