Peru remained the world’s leading exporter of blueberries in 2022

Peru remained the world’s leading exporter of blueberries in 2022 after shipping US$1.362 billion, the South American nation’s Exporters Association (ADEX) reported Friday.

According to the CIEN-ADEX Global Economy and Business Research Center report, Peruvian shipments last year surpassed even those of the United States, Spain, Canada, the Netherlands, and Morocco, thus maintaining the “privileged position for four consecutive years”.

It should be remembered that in 2021 exports of this fruit reached US$1.221 billion, which implied a growth of 172 percent compared to 2020.

The head of ADEX Consulting, Lizbeth Pumasunco, explained in a statement that the excellent performance of 2022 has resulted “in more than 10 years of investment by companies”.

For the exporters’ association, it is essential to continue the joint work between the public and private sectors with the organization of trade missions to international fairs and the organization of events, to strengthen the capacities of the members of various production chains.

Towards 2016, the Peruvian regions that stood out in production were La Libertad, with more than 1,700 hectares, followed by Lima, Lambayeque, Ancash, Ica, and Cajamarca.

In the face of global demand, Piura and Moquegua were added.

On the other hand, the Exporters’ Association indicated that while between August and December last year, the largest shipments of these “berries” were recorded, in January of this year, 2023, they totaled 72.6 million dollars, representing a growth of 4 percent over the same month of 2022.

In the first month of this year, blueberries reached 25 destinations worldwide, highlighting the United States, Netherlands, United Kingdom, China, Spain, Israel, and Brazil, among others.
