Confirmation of the location of kidnapped candidate Marilú Martínez Núñez in southern Mexico

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The governor of the state of Guerrero, southern Mexico, Héctor Astudillo, confirmed on Thursday that Marilú Martínez Núñez, candidate of the Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) party for the municipal presidency of Cutzamala de Pinzón, who was kidnapped early Wednesday morning, was found alive.

“I am pleased to report that Marilú Martínez Núñez, candidate for municipal president of Cutzamala, is well, we are very pleased to see her in good condition. We will continue to do everything that corresponds to us so that the electoral process develops as best as possible,” Astudillo wrote in a message on Twitter.

The state governor published a photo of the candidate in an office wearing jeans and a pink blouse.

Meanwhile, the MC party echoed Astudillo’s publication and confirmed that Marilú “is safe” and that they will be attentive and awaiting official reports from the authorities.

On Wednesday, hours after the kidnapping, the national leader of MC, Clemente Castañeda, informed that the candidate and her family had been deprived of their freedom by an armed group in the municipality of Cutzamala de Pinzón.

On Wednesday, Mexico closed the electoral campaign, the most violent in the country’s history, with a total of 780 aggressions or global crimes against politicians, with a balance of 89 politicians murdered, 35 of them aspirants, according to the consulting firm Etellekt.

Mexico celebrates this Sunday the largest elections in its history, when 93.5 million citizens are called to renew the Chamber of Deputies, 15 of 32 governors, 30 local congresses, and 1,900 city councils.
