Ecuador’s Lasso signs decree to call a referendum in 2023

Ecuador’s president, Guillermo Lasso, signed a decree on Tuesday officially calling for a widespread consultation scheduled for 2023, addressing citizen security issues and strengthening democracy and environmental protection.

“Ecuadorians can decide on eight questions that will bring more security, better representation, and allow the care of the environment. With this consultation, Ecuador wins!” the Ecuadorian president has indicated in his official Twitter profile.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) has 15 days to make the official call and, after that, 60 days to execute the consultation, so the consultation is expected in February, as reported by the newspaper ‘El Telegrafo’.

Among the questions, citizens will have to answer on issues such as the extradition of Ecuadorians who have committed crimes related to organized crime, as well as the reduction of the number of assembly members or the requirement of a minimum number of affiliates to political formations, among others.
