Colombia’s unemployment rate drops to 12.3% in August

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Colombia’s unemployment rate stood at 12.3% in August, down 4.5 percentage points from the same month last year, according to data provided Thursday (30) by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).

The unemployed population decreased by 914,000 people during the eighth month of the year to reach 3.05 million unemployed Colombians.

In terms of employment, the director of DANE, Juan Daniel Oviedo, explained that Colombia had recovered almost two million jobs in one year to reach a total of 21.7 million employed, with an employment rate of 53.7%.

“In August 2021, with a recovery of approximately two million jobs compared to August 2020, we are observing that the country in the national total has had a recovery of 82.5 percent of the jobs that had been lost in August last year,” Oviedo explained.

However, if the data is compared to 2019, the country still has 424,000 jobs to recover, since, in August two years ago, there were 22.1 million Colombians employed, compared to 21.7 million this year.
