Chilean President criticizes Boluarte in CELAC for repression of protests in Peru

The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, condemned the repression exercised during the command of his Peruvian counterpart Dina Boluarte against demonstrators in that country and called for a “change of course” in Peru.

The Chilean president affirmed that it is “unacceptable that the universities of America revive the sad scenes of the times of the dictatorships of the Southern Cone, as happened recently with the violent entry of the police into the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos”.

“More than 50 people have lost their lives in the protests in Peru, and that should shock us; in the face of these outrages, I reiterate Chile’s willingness to contribute in all multilateral spaces to accompany an inclusive dialogue, capable of building democratic governance and ensuring respect for human rights,” he added.

Finally, he said that it is necessary to a “change of course in Peru because the balance left by the path of repression and violence is unacceptable for those of us who defend democracy and human rights, and I have no doubt that here in CELAC that will is overwhelmingly majority,” he added.
