Brazil could have been world’s 1st country to start vaccination – Butantan director

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - In testimony to the Covid CPI (parliamentary investigative committee) on Thursday, May 27, Butantan Institute director Dimas Covas, said that in December last year, when the world was starting Covid-19 vaccination, the Butantan Institute had produced 5.5 million Coronavac doses and 4 million were being processed. Neither batches had a contract with the Ministry of Health.

According to the director, had it not been for the "mishaps" the Institute had to face during the period, "both from the contract and regulatory perspective," Brazil could have begun immunization against Covid-19 still last year.
