Expansion of illegal gold mining in Brazil’s Amazon contaminates region with 100 tons of mercury -survey

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The expansion of illegal mining in Brazil over the past two years has caused a flood of mercury into Amazon waters. An estimated 100 tons of neurotoxic metal was used to mine gold illegally in the region in 2019 and 2020, according to estimates based on an official survey.

This gold was exported from Brazil to countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.
