Brazilian Electoral Court Invalidates Sergipe State Gubernatorial Election Results

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Regional Electoral Court (TRE) of Sergipe voted yesterday, August 19th, to invalidate the election of the state governor, Belivaldo Chagas, and the vice-governor, Eliane Aquino, for misuse of political power.

By six votes to one, the court held that the governor used public funds to favor his re-election in last year’s elections.

Despite the decision, Belivaldo Chagas and Eliane Aquino should remain in office while appealing to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) in Brasília to overturn the local ruling.

According to information from the TRE, the misuse of power was marked by the signing of service orders for works “on the eve of the beginning of the electoral campaign period”.

The Agência Brasil report made contact with the governor’s office but failed to locate any officials available to comment on the decision.
