RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Despite a deep recession and the world’s second-deadliest COVID-19 outbreak, candidates backed by Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro are expected to win control of Congress next month, politicians and analysts said on Monday, January 18th.
Bolsonaro is openly supporting center-right Congressman Arthur Lira (PP-AL) for President of the Chamber of Deputies, against centrist Baleia Rossi (MDB-SP), who has the backing of current President Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ) and lawmakers keeping their distance from the president.
