Opposition to gay marriage rose 7% in Brazil and reaches 46% – PoderData

PoderData survey conducted from Jan. 29 to 31, 2023, shows that 46% are opposed to same-sex marriage in Brazil.

]The percentage rose 7 percentage points in 7 months.

In two years, the increase was 13 percentage points. This is the highest level of opposition recorded by the polling company since the question was first asked in January 2021.

This is also the first time in 24 months that the percentage of those against is numerically higher than those in favor.

Considering the survey’s margin of error of 2 percentage points, there is a technical tie between the two rates.

Today, those in favor of same-sex marriage total 44%.

The rate was 51% in January 2021. In June 2022, it was already at 44%. It has remained at the same level since then.

The increase in the number of those against same-sex marriages is due to those who declared themselves undecided on the subject: in June 2022, they were 17%; today, they are 10%.

The survey was carried out by PoderData, a company of the Poder360 Jornalismo group, with its own resources.

The data were collected from Jan. 29 to 31, 2023, using calls to cell phones and landlines.

There were 2,500 interviews in 288 cities in the 27 states of the Federation. The confidence interval is 95%. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.

PoderData highlights:

  • favorable – there is more support among residents of the Southeast region (51%), those who have up to a college education (56%), and those who earn more than 5 salaries (58%);
  • opponents – the rate is higher among residents of the Midwest region.
