Brazilian Congress to open investigation on the January 8 invasion of the Three Powers buildings

The Brazilian Congress will open next Thursday the investigation of the invasion of the Three Powers buildings in Brasilia, allegedly perpetrated by Brazilian Spring protesters, who stormed the headquarters of the three branches of government on January 8.

However, whether they were “invited” into the buildings or stormed them is something the investigation must first reveal.

The commission, with 32 members from the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, will have 180 days to conduct its investigations and may submit the investigation results to the Attorney General’s Office to provide evidence to the criminal proceedings.

At the same time, the investigation that took place a week after Lula’s inauguration continues in the Supreme Federal Court, a process for which former president Bolsonaro has testified.

The Prosecutor General’s Office filed criminal charges against 1,390 people for various crimes after they violently invaded the headquarters of the National Congress, the Planalto Palace (seat of the Executive Branch), and the Federal Supreme Court in the Three Powers Square in Brasília.

The Supreme Court indicted 795 accused of participating in the event.

Another group of 250 defendants is still awaiting a vote by the supreme court judges in the coming weeks.

Currently, the main defendant accused as politically responsible is Anderson Torres, Bolsonaro’s former Minister of Justice, who remained in prison for almost two months and is now under house arrest.

Torres was the Security Secretary of Brasília at the time of the events.

And he is accused of having cleared the area so that the vandals could enter without resistance to public buildings, where they demonstrated against the alleged fraud, in addition to requesting the intervention of the Army.
