AI can lead to extinctions like pandemics and nuclear war

A statement signed by leading technology industry experts, including scientists and executives from Microsoft, Google, and other companies such as OENIA, creator of ChatGPT, warns that artificial intelligence technology should be considered a social risk and prioritized similarly to pandemics and nuclear wars.

Hundreds of executives and academics – including Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind; Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI; and Kevin Scott, CTO of Microsoft – signed a statement issued by the Center for AI Safety on Tuesday.

This statement was issued amid growing concerns about regulation and the risks that artificial intelligence technology may pose to humanity.

“AI experts, journalists, policymakers, and the public are increasingly discussing a broad spectrum of important and urgent AI risks,” they explain.

“Still, it can be difficult to express concerns about some of the most serious risks of advanced AI.”

“The following succinct statement aims to overcome this obstacle and open the discussion.”

“It is also intended to create a common understanding of the growing number of experts and public figures who also take some of the most serious risks of advanced AI seriously.”

“Mitigating the extinction risk of AI should be a global priority, along with other societal risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” the paper says.

Artificial intelligence is believed to be the most significant development of the 21st century and is expected to have a huge impact on everyday life in the coming decades.

Computer scientist John McCarthy is credited with coining the term “Artificial Intelligence” in the 1956 Dartmouth Summer Research Project.

Kai-Fu Lee, the former president of Google China and author of the bestseller AI Superpowers, along with renowned author Chen Qiufan, presented in AI 2041:

“Ten Visions For Our Future [book published by Currency] is the vision that AI will generate extraordinary wealth in society, alter the field of medicine and education from a symbiotic relationship between humans and machines, and produce new forms of entertainment and communication.”

“However, AI will challenge the organizing principles of the economic and social order, as the automation of routine jobs may lead to a new social balance.”

“There are also new risks, such as the creation of autonomous weapons and the construction of intelligent technologies that may inherit human bias.”
