Venezuela invites Guyana to resume talks to solve territorial dispute

The Venezuelan Government released this Friday an official communiqué through which it invites the Cooperative Republic of Guyana to resume talks leading to an eventual agreement regarding the territorial controversy that both nations have over the territory of the Essequiba Guiana.

“Venezuela reiterates its cordial invitation to the Government of Guyana to resume the path of political negotiation regarding the dispute over the territory of the Essequiba Guiana, as established in the Geneva Agreement signed on February 17, 1966”, reads the text dated today in Caracas.

In addition, on today’s commemoration of the 57th anniversary of Guyana’s independence, Venezuela congratulated the people of that country.

“On such a great date, the Venezuelan Government conveys its best wishes for the well-being and prosperity of the people of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana”, the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reads.

The diplomatic exhortation of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the invitation to dialogue occurred months after several disagreements between both nations, evidenced by different international actions.

Last year, Guyana filed a unilateral claim before the International Court of Justice; consequently, Venezuela respectfully considered that such an international body has no jurisdiction to address such a dispute.

Caracas insists that the Geneva Agreement, signed by the parties, is the only normative framework that regulates such disputes.

In February of this year, the Venezuelan Government demanded Guyana’s “seriousness, wisdom and diplomatic height of its international responsibilities, since the practical and satisfactory solution of the territorial controversy will depend on its conduct, as required by the Geneva Agreement.”
